Who started this thing.... what is cool and what is not? I feel who cares when it will save your life. Some of the pro's of Skateboarders, should be ashamed of themselves, for not promoting safety, and promoting acting like a idot, and acting like they have no rules. Sorry kids but even adults have rules; rules from work, driving and living.
It seems like the folks on the TV have a great life.... But look at all the problems they have. I would hope that all of you reading this know that you are just begging in life, and I would hope that you would want to protect yourself when you are skating, so you can enjoy what you like to do in the future. I know of a couple of teens that got really hurt, and was out of commission for a long time.
So not wearing a helmet is NOT cool, before you do a really cool trick in front of your friends; stop and think, can I really do this? Am I going to end up in an Ambulance. I worry so much about what I see you all doing, please take care and be greedy when it comes to your safety, it could effect the rest of your life.

Marion Karr is one popular fitness buff.

People wave each time he trains on the rural roads of northern Iredell and Alexander, Yadkin and Wilkes counties. They even held a spaghetti supper for him at a volunteer fire station.

The Statesville businessman leaves today on a 450-mile trip across the state, not by car or bike, but on a skateboard.

Karr is ready to log up to 50 miles a day on his custom long board to raise $10,000 for Huntersville-based Hinds' Feet Farm, a health and wellness center for people with brain injuries. He and the center's executive director, Martin Foil III, grew up together in Concord.

"You break your arm, you heal," Karr said. "You break your leg, it heals. You break your brain, it doesn't heal."

Karr, 47, has skateboarded since he was 8. The owner of a 20-year executive recruiting firm in downtown Statesville, he competes in skateboard events across the country, against athletes half his age. He used to be a competitive cyclist as well.

Karr also has a personal side to his "Surf2TheSurf" journey from Asheville to Carolina Beach: He suffered brain injury when he was 18.

Two days before Karr graduated from Concord High School in 1981, a motorist struck his bicycle from behind on Union Street in downtown Concord as Karr competed in a cycling event.

The car drove him into a telephone pole, fracturing his jaw, one of his shoulders and two neck vertebrae, he said. He permanently lost hearing in his right ear and said he's had to focus on one task at a time since the wreck or his attention easily drifts.

"It's called the silent epidemic, because you don't hear about it," Karr said. "You can't look at someone and say, 'You have a brain injury.' But there are so many people with traumatic brain injuries, it's unreal."

Karr has already raised at least $4,000 toward his goal for Hinds' Feet Farm.

Finish Line Ford of Statesville donated a 2010 Flex crossover vehicle for the trip and is paying for all the gasoline.

The managers of the 16 Food Lions in Iredell County teamed up on a $500 gift card Karr will use to restock food and drinks along the way.

Karr will drink water and juices and eat pasta, chicken and cereals and a granola mixture he makes with shelled hemp seed, almonds, mixed dried fruits and coconut butter.

He expects to average 8 1/2 miles an hour on his board. "It's like running a marathon," said Karr, who is 6-feet-1 and 220 pounds. He's taught himself to push with one leg and then with the other to help his endurance; most skateboarders push with just one leg.

He'll take a GPS tracker and will have LED bike lights on his backpack. He plans safety seminars to raise awareness of the need to wear safety gear when biking or skateboarding.

Union Grove Fire Chief Nolan Shumaker arranged for Karr and his small entourage to camp outside fire departments across the state.

The group includes friend John Charlton, 72, of Statesville, who will drive the Ford Flex several miles ahead of Karr.

"There are not enough adjectives to describe his dedication to brain injury awareness, his untiring devotion and training for this very worthy cause," Carlton said.

Former chef Todd Floyd will prepare on-the-road meals. Karr's wife, Donna, and their daughters, Emily, 21, and Hannah, 17, will catch up with him at various stops.

He'll travel through Lawndale, Sherrills Ford, Terrell, Huntersville, Statesville and Union Grove before heading east to Asheboro, Apex, Bouies Creek, Jordan Lake and Wilmington.

Restaurateur and wildlife conservationist Mark Lancaster will host a Live After Five benefit for Karr at 5 p.m. June 7 at his Midway Restaurant on N.C. 150 in Terrell. Karr will also appear in Raleigh before the Governor's Advisory Board on Brain Injury.

"I want people to be aware that brain injury is everywhere, and these are people who need to be helped," Karr said.

Read more: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/06/05/1479140/man-plans-to-skateboard-from-mountains.html#ixzz0q1cJsud6

Dressing Like A Skateboarder

1 Research skateboarding brands on the internet and of some skaters, as it can lead you to discovering companies whom you've never heard of, but have some sick products. Skateboarding is about being yourself, and doing what you love, not a stereotype.

2 Buy yourself some skate shoes. Most skaters wear them, as they are specifically manufactured for skateboarding (Some have extra stitching.), and do not go for whichever looks the coolest; if you're a true skater, they'll be ripped in no time. Some good brands are ES', DVS, Supra,Vans, Circa , DC, Globe, and Adio. It is up to you.

3 Keep your hair long or short. Whatever is comfortable for you works. Long shaggy hair isn't a sign for a skater, what some people think. Andrew Reynolds is a real skater and he doesn't have long hair and not all skaters do. You can make your hair spiky, messy, or versatile -- whatever you want.

4 Choose comfortable clothing. Wear any type of shirt, depending on your comfort level and your taste. Select either short sleeved or long sleeved, and buy pants that enable you flexibility while skateboarding. Look for comfort first, and style next. Once you've found a style look at your local skate-shop for brand tees. You can also wear New Era caps for a skater style. DC, Etnies, and Vans. skater hats are recommended. If you want you can also wear baseball team caps. Flat brim 59Fifty hats are recommended.

5 Don't wear skating brand shirts all the time. Wear casual clothing as well. Striped shirts, plain t shirts , hoodies, brands shirts all that is skateboarder clothes. Sweet band shirts are good for skater style.

6 Don't wear "Phat Farm," or "Southpole" at all unless you want the gangster look, which is not skater.

7 Try to take some examples from video games like "Tony Hawk" but DON'T COPY just take examples only to any one who says that skateboarders should wear skulls shirts or leather jackets that's totally not a skater.

8 Don't let anyone tell you what you NEED to have for skater style. It is YOUR style, you make it you,r choice. You're hopefully reading this just for ideas. Look at other skaters and see what they wear. Fit in but don't try to be a copy-cat. Wear what you like without looking like a fool. Having scraped elbows and knees and a ripped pair of jeans might look cool, but don't scrape your elbows and rip your jeans on purpose, since that is seriously being a poser. Instead, just think of it as a thing gained if you have a bad fall. Although you wouldn't think so normally. A lot of skaters wear colorful, thick belts that makes your jeans have some color to match you shoes and shirts. Try looking for them at PacSun. They always have awesome belts. Having torn up shoes is a sign of a skater, but real skaters hate it when their shoes get torn up. Because of that don't go cutting up your shoes, it just ruins your shoes and makes you look like a poser. It also pisses off skaters because they understand that rips are the cause of the end of their shoes' life and you are basically saying that you want to ruin your shoes.

If you do want to dress like a skater, make sure you don't look like a clone, it's not cool and you'll end up looking like a poser. So don't be afraid to stand out, it's not like looking like everyone else will make you a better skater.
SKATERS HATE POSERS!(If you are already a skater, you understand), so don't just skate to brag or for the look. Avoid brands such as Gap or Sketcher. Learning how to skate would be good... If you are are a trendy type of skater, wear KR3W, Etnies, Plan B, and DVS clothes. If you dress like other kinds of skaters, wear Element, Baker, Burton, Analog, Hurley, Quicksiler, Volcom, Billabong, etc. clothes. Brands and fashions from PacSun are good too for the trendy look. If you lean more towards hip hop, buy Zoo York, DGK, and City Stars products (City Stars is pretty hard to find though). For the skater who tending toward the trendy hip hop style, try brands like Nikes (S.B-Skateboard)Dunks shirts and L.R.G. For elite expensive brands try BAPES/BAPING APES, Billionaire Boys Club-Original, and Billionaire Boys Club-Ice Cream . Also try some snowboarding brands like Burton cause alot of skaters snowboard. One more thing, avoid wearing Hollister, Aeropostale, or American Eagle. Those are what I like to call jock clothes. Sure, some skaters wear that stuff, but only 2 out of 10 skaters actually wear them. Journeys store also carries skater influenced trendy fashions. As far as sneakers brands, you can wear Nikes SB Dunks, Nikes SB Blazers, Vans, or DC shoes. edit WarningsShoes will, of course, be damaged in this after-school activity. Board will also tend to break often if you do big gaps or stairs.

Don't copy things your friends do, you might seem like a poser. (With the exception of tricks.) Skaters like to wear really tight jeans, but normal jeans are fine. If you wear tight jeans, buy slim-fit because they stretch and are good for skating. You don't have to buy jeans from skating brands as they're pretty pricey. A lot of skaters wear Levi's, Lee, and Wrangler jeans. Don't buy bad quality jeans though. Dont mess with hardcore skaters, THEY WILL THINK OF YOU AS A POSER. Dont make all of these changes suddenly, it just makes you look like a copycat. Learn to skate well enough that you can at least ride the board in a controlled and cool way, and then begin to incorporate "skater" clothes into your style.

Says it's faster and covers rough ground better than his other board and he can do some really cool stuff on it. I'll warn you that it is a little different, but he wouldn't trade it for anything. It is called Onda. Check it out at http://www.ondaboard.com

now we today are a new genration we look and laugh its n ot about hey can u ollie that or do this is all about hey what kind of flip trick u can do now. now see we have skate parks all the fancy lil park stuff and places. but the thing we need to learn is to respect the history that we never lived back when parents where completly against skaters we were referd to as rebelous and as scum when it was all fancy hyped up and when we all just wanted to get famous and be big no when it was all about hey bro lets go skate bc its fun no every one wants to get big sadly this is what skateing is not about yea i wanna progress and it is my goal to get further but its not why i do it i do it bc u get new friends have fun. 70 and 80s before it was the age of the falshy flip tricks there were times when there was few places skater could go where adults accepted them much like DAN aka maker of TEEN SKATE. there were a few house like that kids would go there skate watch there vids sum times have ramps and just have fun. when we all wanted to just be famous or show each other up out of making sum one look bad well thats when alot of skateing lose its ways lost who it was lost the fact that sure it was full of rif raft, punks, out cast. but the one thing they all had in common was when ur on the board u have respect for all ur fellow skaters now ive seen this change when i had a kid try to start a fight with me at the skate park whic ended fast when it started enough said i won but thats not the point the point is we need to all be cool not fight with each other still today there odds against skaters and the one thing that ruins and brings every thing down from bands to nations to towns is internal fighting and no support.if u belive in what iam saying leav me a comment. LIfes easy but a skaters life is never easy
